A Mesa man died after a shootout with police following a trespassing call and vehicle pursuit.
A 34-year-old man, Cameron Oberlin, died in a shooting incident with Mesa police early Wednesday morning after officers responded to a trespassing report near Ray and Sossaman roads.
Oberlin became combative, fled in his vehicle, and was stopped using a Grappler device, but continued resisting.
After less-lethal tactics failed, he fired shots from his car, striking one officer in the right side.
The officer was hospitalized but later released and is recovering well.
Oberlin died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle.
The Gilbert Police Department is leading the investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
