A man sentenced to 18 months for shooting a family dog with birdshot, claiming he meant to use a less-lethal round.
A 47-year-old Newport man, Tyson Kay, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for killing a 6-year-old black Labrador named Daisy with birdshot in July 2024.
Kay, who had 15 prior convictions and was on probation, admitted to loading his shotgun to shoot the dog, though he claimed he intended to use a less-lethal round.
Daisy was not threatening his animals and was fleeing when shot.
The dog’s owners described her as a family member, and the judge called the killing cruel and unjustified.
Kay was also given two years of probation, ordered to forfeit his shotgun, and banned from owning firearms.
