Japan’s PM tells Trump ending Russian LNG imports would hurt Japan’s energy security and raise prices.
Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told U.S. President Donald Trump during a Tokyo meeting that cutting off Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports would harm Japan’s energy security, as Russia supplies about nine percent of Japan’s LNG.
She emphasized Japan’s investments in the Sakhalin-2 project and warned that abruptly ending imports would be costly, could raise electricity prices, and benefit Russia and China.
Japan has increased U.S. LNG imports to diversify supply ahead of expiring contracts between 2028 and 2033.
The country currently imports less than one percent of its oil from Russia under a sanctions waiver set to expire in December.
