Ireland wrote off €7.97M in uncollectible welfare payments in 2024 due to errors and deceased recipients.
The Irish government wrote off over €15 million in incorrect welfare payments from 2023 to 2024, with €7.97 million in 2024—up from €7.64 million the prior year—due to no feasible recovery, primarily involving deceased recipients or small amounts under €100.
Overpayments totaled €273 million over the two years, rising to €157.5 million in 2024, largely from inaccurate applicant information or administrative errors.
The largest write-offs were for non-contributory and contributory state pensions, illness benefits, invalidity pensions, jobseekers’ benefit, and payments to widows or widowers.
The Department of Social Protection emphasized that overpayments represent less than 0.5% of total welfare spending and that recovery efforts consider fairness and financial hardship, using deductions up to 15% from ongoing benefits or wage attachments when needed.
The department recovered over €100 million in 2024, up from €87 million in 2023.
