India fines highway contractors up to $60,000 for repeated accidents in high-risk zones and launches nationwide cashless accident care.
India has introduced stricter penalties for contractors managing National Highways under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, imposing fines of ₹25 lakh for more than one accident in a 500-meter stretch within a year, rising to ₹50 lakh if repeated the following year.
The move, part of revised guidelines, aims to improve road safety by holding contractors accountable for crash management and corrective actions in 3,500 identified high-risk zones.
The changes apply to various highway development models, including BOT, HAM, EPC, and others.
Additionally, a nationwide cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims is being launched, offering up to ₹1.5 lakh in emergency medical care within seven days at designated hospitals, building on a pilot program that began in March 2024.
