GAMRU warns boaters of rising rescue risks from non-motorized vessels and urges safety training ahead of winter.
The Grimsby Auxiliary Marine Rescue Unit (GAMRU) is urging boaters to prioritize safety education as the 2025 season ends, noting 35 rescue calls—up from previous years—linked to increased use of kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.
Volunteers warn that even non-motorized vessels are at risk from strong winds and currents, especially from the southwest, leading to people being stranded far from shore.
They recommend training through CanBoat and Transport Canada, and are recruiting new members through sessions in Winona and St. Catharines, with training starting in January.
The group also hosts an annual auction on November 25 to support operations.
GAMRU advierte a los navegantes del aumento de los riesgos de rescate de embarcaciones no motorizadas e insta a la capacitación en seguridad antes del invierno.
