Cumbria urges public to report house spider sightings to monitor declining populations.
The Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre is urging residents to report sightings of house spiders, including Eratigena and Tegenaria species, which are more active from August to October as males search for mates.
These harmless spiders, often found in homes, help control pests and may be declining due to improved home insulation and competition from the expanding cellar spider (Pholcus phalangioides).
The public is invited to contribute to monitoring efforts via free apps like iRecord or iNaturalist, or the Centre’s online form.
