Australia’s top regulator sued Australian Gas Networks over a 2022–2023 ad campaign it claims falsely promised widespread renewable gas for homes soon.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has sued Australian Gas Networks over its 2022–2023 “Love Gas” ad campaign, alleging it misled consumers by suggesting renewable gas would soon be widely available for home use.
The ACCC says the company overstated the near-term feasibility of scaling renewable gases like green hydrogen, despite technical and economic challenges, while seeking faster recovery of investments amid declining gas demand and government moves toward all-electric homes.
Australian Gas Networks denies misleading the public, citing government policies and its targets of 10% renewable gas by 2030 and 100% by 2040, though no significant renewable gas was delivered in its network during that period beyond a small pilot.
The case is set for a Federal Court hearing.
