Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed a bipartisan bill allowing independent candidates to withdraw from the ballot by submitting a sworn statement and paying a fee, a change prompted by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s failed 2024 attempt to remove his name from Wisconsin’s ballot after endorsing Donald Trump.
The law, effective immediately, replaces a prior rule that only allowed removal upon death, making Wisconsin one of the most restrictive states.
It does not apply to major party candidates.
Kennedy’s Supreme Court appeal was rejected without comment after early voting began, and he received less than 0.5% of the vote in Wisconsin.
The law aims to reduce voter confusion and administrative burdens in future elections.
