A UK soldier was jailed for assaulting a trainee, whose suicide followed the Army's failure to act, leading to criminal charges and a conviction.
Warrant Officer Michael Webber, 43, was sentenced to six months in prison for sexually assaulting 19-year-old Royal Artillery Gunner Jaysley Beck during a 2021 training exercise on Thorney Island.
The incident, involving unwanted touching and attempted kissing, was handled internally by the Army, resulting in a letter of apology and no police investigation, despite Beck reporting it and later dying by suicide.
An inquest in February 2025 found the Army’s failure to act contributed significantly to her death.
Webber, who was later promoted, admitted his actions were unacceptable, and was sentenced to serve half his term in custody and placed on the sex offenders register for seven years.
The case was referred to the Defence Serious Crime Unit after the inquest, leading to criminal charges and conviction.
