A Turkish court sentenced hotel owner Halit Ergul and 10 others to life in prison for negligence in a 2025 hotel fire that killed 78 people, including 34 children.
A Turkish court has sentenced hotel owner Halit Ergul and 10 others to life in prison for severe negligence in a January 21, 2025, fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya, Bolu, that killed 78 people, including 34 children, and injured 133.
The blaze, which started at 3:17 a.m. from a spark igniting a garbage bin and rupturing a gas hose, spread rapidly due to faulty alarms, lack of sprinklers, blocked exits, and absent emergency lighting.
Stairwells and elevator shafts acted as chimneys, trapping guests.
The court found the defendants, including hotel managers and public officials, guilty of negligence with probable intent to kill, imposing life sentences for the children’s deaths and additional 25-year terms for other fatalities.
The defendants denied responsibility and plan to appeal.
The verdict drew applause from victims’ families, who had demanded justice, while the tragedy intensified national scrutiny over building safety and accountability in Turkey’s hospitality industry.
