Swindon Borough Council’s Early Years team helped a mother on Universal Credit overcome childcare, language, and mental health barriers, guiding her to secure a free childcare spot starting January and enroll in a work preparation course.
Since April 2024, the Working Family entitlement scheme has delivered over seven million hours of government-funded childcare to 28,000 children across Swindon, supporting families with up to 30 hours weekly for children from nine months old until school entry.
The program, available through 236 registered providers including 137 childminders, aims to boost workforce participation, advance early childhood development, and strengthen local childcare services.
Council officials encourage eligible families to apply via the Best Start in Life website.
