The Punjab Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the federal government to introduce a 27th Amendment to protect local governments, calling for constitutional safeguards to ensure timely elections, prevent political interference, and grant local bodies financial, administrative, and political autonomy.
The resolution, which supports the Local Government Act 2025 and calls for elections within 90 days of council dissolution, emphasizes the need for continuity and public trust in democracy.
Punjab has requested an extension until January 2026 to finalize delimitation rules and plans to submit union council notifications by December 31, 2025.
The proposal, backed by a cross-party caucus, has been forwarded to Parliament.
