Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation challenges Saskatchewan’s approval of the Wheeler River uranium project, citing inadequate consultation and failure to uphold constitutional duties.
The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has launched a judicial review in Saskatchewan’s Court of King’s Bench, challenging the provincial government’s approval of the Wheeler River uranium project without fulfilling its constitutional duty to consult.
The Nation alleges it raised concerns as early as 2022, but meaningful consultation only began in November 2024, giving them just six weeks to review thousands of technical pages without funding for experts.
They argue the process was an “after-the-fact invitation” and failed to consider their rights, title, and traditional land use.
While not opposing the project in principle, PBCN says the lack of early engagement undermines their rights and threatens cultural and environmental heritage.
The case is set for a prolonged legal battle.
