Odisha bans fishing for seven months to protect Olive Ridley turtles nesting along its coast.
Odisha has launched a seven-month fishing ban from November 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, along 20 km of its coastline near Gahirmatha, Dhamra, Devi, and Rushikulya rivers to protect endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles during their nesting season.
The ban, enforced under state and national laws, prohibits fishing in key turtle habitats, including the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, with 14 protection camps and coordinated patrols by forest, fisheries, marine police, and coast guard personnel.
Mechanized boats are banned, but traditional fishermen using non-mechanized vessels beyond the 20-km zone may fish.
The state provided ₹15,000 aid to about 11,000 affected fishing families, though some unions demand more support.
Over 606,000 turtles nested in early 2025, highlighting the region’s global significance for the species.
