A Mauritian man traced his family’s roots in Odisha after four attempts, collecting soil as a symbol of connection and urging India to help build a temple in Mauritius.
Ramrup Jagannath, a Mauritian citizen, successfully traced his ancestral roots in Mulgaon village, Jajpur district, Odisha, after four attempts, aided by local authorities and historical records from the 1870 British indenture era.
His ancestor was brought to Mauritius as a Girmitya laborer, and Jagannath collected soil from the village as a symbolic gesture of connection.
Though his family no longer resides there, he expressed hope of reuniting with relatives and urged the Indian government to help build a Jagannath Temple in Mauritius for his community of about 3,000 people.
Jajpur District Collector Ambar Kumar Kar pledged ongoing support and invited him to return.
