flag The Maldives bans smoking and vaping for those born in 2007 or later, starting Nov. 1, 2025.

The Maldives has implemented a first-of-its-kind generational smoking ban, effective November 1, 2025, prohibiting individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, from purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products, including cigarettes and vaping devices. The law applies to both residents and tourists across the nation’s 1,191 islands, with retailers required to verify age and face fines up to 50,000 rufiyaa ($3,200) for violations. Using vape products incurs a 5,000 rufiyaa ($320) penalty. The ban, aimed at creating a tobacco-free generation, also prohibits all electronic cigarettes and vaping products for every age group. While similar policies have been proposed in other countries, New Zealand repealed its version in November 2023.
