The cult singer-songwriter, known for his eccentric style and enduring fan base, first gained attention in 1977 with a BBC Old Grey Whistle Test appearance and a Top of the Pops slot introduced by Elton John, followed by a UK Top 30 hit with “Really Free.” He achieved a second major chart success in 2002 with “Bunsen Burner,” which reached number nine.
