Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group, has claimed responsibility for its first known attack in Nigeria, killing one soldier and seizing weapons and cash in Kwara State on October 28.
The assault, confirmed by a military source but not officially acknowledged by the Nigerian military, marks JNIM’s expansion into Nigeria from its core operations in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
The group, active since 2017, has previously carried out deadly attacks in the Sahel, including a massacre of 200 soldiers in Burkina Faso.
The incident adds to Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges from Boko Haram and ISWAP, which have caused tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over two million people.
President Bola Tinubu recently reshuffled military leadership, urging decisive action against emerging threats.
