A homeless challenge raised $4,533 for Larry’s Place, a men’s shelter forced to cut hours due to funding shortfalls.
The Elliot Lake Women’s Group held a four-day Homeless Challenge from October 23 to 26 to raise awareness and funds for Larry’s Place, a men’s emergency shelter facing severe funding shortages.
Four participants lived in tents without indoor shelter or consistent food, enduring cold temperatures and sleep deprivation to simulate homelessness.
The event raised $4,533, a fraction of the shelter’s $400,000 annual operating cost.
Due to insufficient funding, Larry’s Place will reduce operations from 24/7 to 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. starting December 1, limiting access for homeless men.
Organizers emphasized the emotional and physical hardships of homelessness and the urgent need for sustained community support to maintain critical services.
