At least 10 people have died and several remain missing in Kenya’s Elgeyo Marakwet County after heavy rains triggered mudslides, rockfalls, and flooding in the Embobut and Murkutwa areas starting Friday evening. Intense rainfall caused dangerous runoff along the Kerio escarpment, flooding low-lying regions and isolating villages by debris and floodwaters. Authorities confirmed eight deaths in Murkutwa and two in Embobut, with more recoveries expected. Rescue operations continue amid ongoing rain and unstable terrain, hampered by blocked roads and limited access. A police helicopter is awaited to assist. County officials urge evacuations in landslide-prone zones as rivers overflowed and infrastructure was damaged.
