Ghana bans mining in forest reserves to combat illegal mining and protect ecosystems.
Ghana has introduced legislation to permanently ban mining in forest reserves, revoking LI 2462, a 2022 law that allowed presidential approval for mining in protected areas.
The move, driven by public concern over illegal mining (galamsey), aims to halt environmental degradation, including deforestation and water pollution, and restore stricter 2020 guidelines.
The government cites ongoing threats to 44 forest reserves and contamination of major rivers.
The new instrument, if not challenged in Parliament within 21 days, will take effect automatically.
