French explorers Matthieu Tordeur and Heidi Sevestre have begun a three-month, 4,000-kilometer kite-ski expedition across Antarctica to locate ice up to 130,000 years old.
Their mission, timed to coincide with the COP30 climate conference, aims to study ancient ice layers to determine if West Antarctica’s ice sheet collapsed during a past warm period when global temperatures were about three degrees Celsius higher.
The data could help refine sea-level rise projections, as West Antarctica holds enough ice to raise oceans by up to six meters.
