A fire erupted Friday morning at 5:30 a.m. in a vacant wood-frame building on 20th Street South in Birmingham’s Five Points South neighborhood, quickly spreading to two adjacent brick apartment and condominium buildings.
The initial structure, once a house, collapsed after becoming fully engulfed, and one of the brick buildings reignited later, also burning completely.
Three buildings were affected, displacing at least 18 people with no injuries reported.
Fire crews from Birmingham Fire and Rescue evacuated all occupants safely, and the American Red Cross is providing shelter and support.
