Dozens of Nigerian women married in traditional ceremony honoring mythical figure Awon, boosting fertility and cultural pride.
A traditional mass wedding known as Awon marriage took place in Shao, Nigeria’s Kwara State, in October 2025, bringing together dozens of young women in vibrant attire who paraded under blue umbrellas to drumbeats.
Rooted in local legend, the annual ceremony honors Awon, a mythical one-breasted woman believed to have promised prosperity and fertility if all eligible women were married in her honor each year.
Participants, including nurses and hairdressers, said they join to honor ancestors, secure fertility blessings, and preserve cultural heritage.
The event, which includes a procession, priestly blessings, music, dancing, and feasting, draws regional visitors and reinforces community identity.
