A CubCrafters Carbon Cub UL climbed to 37,609 feet, setting a new altitude record that surpasses a 75-year-old mark held by a Piper Super Cub.
The flight, piloted by Jon Kotwicki from San Luis Obispo on October 28, reached peak altitude in under an hour under extreme cold conditions.
Equipped with a turbocharged Rotax 916 iS engine and Alaska Bushwheels, the aircraft exceeded both the previous Cub record and the ultralight record set in 1996.
Though not officially recognized by the FAI, the achievement highlights advancements in backcountry aviation and was supported by Cal Poly, Rotax, and other partners.
