A 31-year-old Croatian man died in Dublin after a fight over a lighter escalated, leading to a fatal assault by three others.
On March 30, 2024, Josip Strok, 31, died from severe head injuries after being attacked in Dublin’s Grange View estate following a minor dispute over a lighter at a bus stop.
Strok and his friend David Druzinec, both Croatian and drinking, had asked a 17-year-old for a lighter, leading to an altercation.
After the teen reported the incident, Mark Lee, 44, and two others—Anthony Delappe, 18, and Connor Rafferty, 19—followed them.
Lee and Delappe assaulted Strok with a plastic pickaxe handle and kicks, causing a fatal skull fracture.
Rafferty struck Strok with a half-crutch, claiming he meant only light blows.
Strok died four days later.
Druzinec survived with facial injuries.
Lee and Delappe were convicted of manslaughter; Rafferty was acquitted, with the court accepting his claim of minimal intent.
