UPI drove India’s 2025 festive spending surge, reaching ₹17.8 lakh crore, up 18% from 2024.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) led India’s 2025 festive season spending, with transaction values reaching ₹17.8 lakh crore—up from ₹15.1 lakh crore the previous year—according to a Bank of Baroda report.
UPI saw a 2.6% month-on-month rise in September, while debit card usage more than doubled to ₹65,395 crore, reversing years of decline.
Credit card transactions remained restrained.
Combined, the three payment methods totaled ₹18.8 lakh crore in festive spending, driven by strong demand in online marketplaces, apparel, electronics, and liquor, with double-digit growth in key sectors.
Average UPI transactions were ₹1,052, debit cards ₹8,084, and credit cards ₹1,932.
The surge is attributed to structural factors like income tax benefits and anticipated GST cuts, with the bank forecasting continued private consumption growth through the third quarter.
