South Korea launches its fifth spy satellite via SpaceX to boost 24/7 North Korea surveillance using radar.
South Korea is launching its fifth military spy satellite from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday, completing a five-satellite constellation to enhance round-the-clock surveillance of North Korea using synthetic aperture radar.
The launch, carried by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, marks a key step in boosting South Korea’s independent intelligence capabilities and reducing reliance on U.S. satellite data.
The new satellite will enable monitoring every two hours, regardless of weather, supporting the country’s three-axis deterrence strategy.
North Korea has also attempted space-based reconnaissance, launching its first military satellite in 2023, though a later attempt failed in May 2024.
