South Dakota Public Broadcasting cuts 7 staff, ends 'South Dakota Focus,' and reduces other shows after losing federal funding.
South Dakota Public Broadcasting reduced planned layoffs from 15 to seven staff members after securing private donations and grants following a $1.1 billion federal funding cut that cost SDPB $2.2 million.
The organization, which relies on state funds, grants, and donations, will cut four journalists, two engineers, and one marketing specialist, leaving five positions unfilled and reducing staff from 63.5 to 51.5 full-time equivalents.
As a result, the show “South Dakota Focus” will end, “Dakota Life” will reduce output, and the radio program “In The Moment” will be shortened to 15 minutes and integrated into “Morning Edition,” with extra content available via podcast.
SDPB will continue live legislative coverage, high school sports, arts programming, and emergency communications, while planning a strategic shift for educational content as current grants expire.
