A police dog ended a high-risk pursuit in Wainfleet, stopping a suspect who resisted arrest and reached for an officer’s gun.
A Niagara Regional Police dog named Jax helped end a high-risk pursuit and takedown in Wainfleet in September, when 24-year-old Jonathan Lamontagne, responding to a report of an erratic driver, fled police, resisted arrest, and reached for an officer’s firearm.
After multiple spike strips failed and the vehicle was boxed in, Jax intervened, ending the resistance with a single puncture wound.
Lamontagne, who had no prior record and claimed he panicked possibly due to nonprescription drugs, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to resist arrest and flight from police.
He was sentenced to time served and two years of probation.
A judge called the situation extremely dangerous, noting the dog’s role likely prevented serious harm or death.
