New charter school for autistic teens launches in 2026 to reduce absenteeism and aid reintegration.
In October 2025, Associate Education Minister David Seymour announced the 2026 launch of the Autism NZ Education Hub, a new charter school for autistic and neurodivergent students in years 9 to 13 in Wellington and Auckland.
The school, funded like state schools but with greater operational flexibility, will offer personalized learning plans combining online, community-based, and in-person instruction to support reintegration into traditional classrooms.
It aims to address high absenteeism and school rejection among neurodivergent students, following a 2023 report highlighting the need for alternative education models.
The hub is one of five new charter schools, bringing the national total to 17, with more expected as state schools consider conversion.
