Jorge Rueda Landeros, 55, was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 death of American University professor Sue Ann Marcum, 52, whose body was found in her Bethesda home.
Prosecutors said Rueda Landeros, her former Spanish and yoga instructor, killed her after a financial dispute, staged a burglary, and fled to Mexico, where he lived under a new identity for 12 years.
He was arrested in December 2022 during a U.S.-Mexico joint operation, extradited, and tried in Montgomery County.
Investigators linked him to the crime scene via DNA and alleged he gained over $250,000 from Marcum while she lost $312,000.
