A Malaysian mother was sentenced to five years in prison for neglect leading to her autistic son's death in 2023.
A Malaysian court sentenced Ismanira Abdul Manaf to five years in prison on October 31, 2025, for neglect resulting in physical harm to her six-year-old autistic son, Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who died in December 2023 after going missing near a stream in Selangor.
The Petaling Jaya Sessions Court found her guilty, rejecting claims that she left her son unsupervised, and ordered a two-year good behaviour bond, a RM3,000 security deposit, and 120 hours of community service.
Her husband was acquitted.
The case drew national attention, with the family and defense urging leniency, citing that Zayn’s murderer remains at large and that Ismanira suffered emotional trauma.
The court upheld the conviction, ruling the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
