Malaysia urges ASEAN to boost cyber defense amid rising threats and signs U.S. defense deal.
Malaysia's Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin urged ASEAN to strengthen cyber defense cooperation during the 2025 annual meeting, warning that cyberattacks now pose threats equal to traditional security challenges like South China Sea tensions.
He called for greater regional collaboration to protect critical infrastructure and stabilize the digital domain.
The meeting, attended by defense leaders from ASEAN and major powers including the U.S., China, and Japan, also saw the signing of a defense MOU between Malaysia and the U.S. and renewed calls for an ASEAN observer team to support Thailand and Cambodia’s border dispute resolution.
ASEAN reaffirmed its stance on excluding Myanmar’s military leaders due to their failure to implement the 2021 Five-Point Consensus.
