Maine Family Planning shuts 18 clinics' primary care Oct. 31, 2025, after losing $1.9M in Medicaid funding due to federal abortion funding restrictions.
Maine Family Planning will end primary care at all 18 of its clinics on October 31, 2025, due to a loss of $1.9 million in annual Medicaid funding tied to a Trump administration policy restricting federal funds from abortion providers.
The organization, which serves low-income and rural residents, said abortions make up a small part of its services, which include cancer screenings, STI testing, and contraception.
About 600 patients relied on primary care, and the closure has raised concerns about access to care.
The network challenged the funding cut in federal court, lost a key ruling in August, and is appealing.
The Center for Reproductive Rights, which filed the lawsuit, called the move part of a broader effort to undermine clinics even in states that protect abortion rights.
