Kentucky opens new 5.2-mile stretch of U.S. 460, cutting travel time and boosting economic growth.
Kentucky officials celebrated the completion of the final 5.2-mile segment of U.S. 460 in Pike County, opening a new four-lane highway that connects U.S. 23 near Pikeville to the Virginia state line.
The $800 million project, decades in the making, reduces travel time between Pikeville and Grundy, Virginia, from 43 to 33 miles and improves safety, economic development, and access to services.
The route includes the state’s tallest bridges and is expected to attract investment and jobs, diversifying the region beyond coal.
The roadway opens Friday, with Virginia’s final two-mile stretch scheduled for completion in 2027.
