India launched its first fully digital National Marine Fisheries Census 2025 on October 31, 2025, in Kochi, using two mobile apps—VyAS-BHARAT and VyAS-SUTRA—to digitally enumerate about 1.2 million fisher households across 5,000 marine villages in 13 coastal states and union territories.
The 45-day census, running from November 3 to December 18, collects real-time, geo-referenced data on fishing crafts, gear, infrastructure, and socio-economic factors at over 1,200 landing centers and related facilities.
The initiative, developed by ICAR-CMFRI, aims to enhance data accuracy, transparency, and policy precision, with mandatory registration on the National Fisheries Digital Platform for accessing benefits under the PM-MKSSY scheme.
