Hyundai and Kia debut electric and hydrogen vehicles in Japan, targeting 30% EV sales by 2030.
South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are expanding their electric and hydrogen vehicle presence in Japan, making their first joint appearance at the Tokyo Mobility Show.
Hyundai unveiled the new NEXO hydrogen SUV with a 720 km range and 5-minute refueling, set for launch in early 2026, while Kia introduced the PV5 electric van, targeting Japan’s commercial vehicle market, alongside the KONA Electric and INSTER models.
Both companies are partnering with Japan’s Sojitz Corp. to form Kia PBV Japan, aiming to support Japan’s goal of 30% electric vehicle sales by 2030.
Despite strong competition from domestic brands like Toyota, Hyundai reported meeting its compact car sales target in Japan for the first time since re-entering the market in 2022.
