Greece launches €2.5B plan to combat drought with desalination, infrastructure upgrades, and higher water bills.
Greece has unveiled a €2.5 billion plan to address severe water shortages caused by prolonged drought, focusing on Attica, Thessaloniki, and drought-prone islands.
The initiative includes building desalination plants, upgrading aging infrastructure, and connecting reservoirs and rivers to improve supply.
Water levels in Attica’s main reservoirs have dropped to 377 million cubic meters, raising concerns of shortages within two years.
To fund the plan, household water bills will rise by 2 to 3 euros monthly, though prices will remain among the lowest in the EU.
