Former Indian official gave money to man who took 19 hostage; all rescued, investigation ongoing.
Former Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar said he gave financial help to Rohit Arya, the 50-year-old man who died in a Mumbai police operation after taking 19 people hostage.
Arya, a former project director for a government cleanliness initiative involving 64,000 schools, claimed he was owed money and had collected funds from students via a website, sparking departmental objections.
Kesarkar said he issued a cheque out of courtesy after Arya raised concerns about unpaid dues, though the department maintained funds were collected without authorization.
Arya’s family said he completed the project but received no payment or recognition.
All hostages, including 17 children, were rescued safely.
The incident is under police investigation.
