Charlotte builds $30M shelter to ease pet overcrowding and reduce euthanasias.
Charlotte has started construction on a $30 million animal shelter at 5400 South Tryon Street, adding 100 dog and 30 cat spaces to nearly double the city’s pet capacity.
The new facility, four miles from the current Byrum Drive shelter, follows a June 2025 funding approval and is being built by Albion General Contractors.
The existing shelter faced severe overcrowding in early 2025, taking in over 4,189 animals in the first five months and 667 in May alone, leading to 445 euthanasias due to space limits.
The new shelter aims to reduce euthanasia rates and improve outcomes for homeless pets.
