Australian miner Forrest criticizes Trump’s pro-fossil fuel stance, touting Fortescue’s 2030 green iron push amid global renewable growth.
Australian mining executive Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's stance on renewable energy, calling it out of step with global trends.
Speaking at Fortescue’s annual meeting, he reaffirmed the company’s goal to eliminate fossil fuels from iron ore operations by 2030 and achieve “real zero” emissions by 2040.
Despite exiting two green hydrogen projects due to high costs, Fortescue is advancing green iron production at its Christmas Creek site, set to launch later in 2025.
Forrest cited data showing renewables surpassed coal in global power generation in 2025 and highlighted the International Energy Agency’s forecast of a sharp decline in oil demand by 2026.
He condemned efforts by the U.S., Russia, and Saudi Arabia to delay emissions cuts in shipping, calling them short-sighted.
While acknowledging past setbacks, he emphasized that failure is part of innovation in the clean energy transition.
Fortescue reported record iron ore shipments but a lower-than-expected $5.2 billion profit due to falling commodity prices.
