Australia launched a factory to build U.S.-developed autonomous underwater drones for its navy, with the first unit now in testing.
Australia has launched a Sydney factory producing autonomous underwater drones called Ghost Sharks, developed by US company Anduril, under a $1.7 billion government contract.
The first drone has completed production and is undergoing in-water testing ahead of delivery to the Royal Australian Navy in January.
Designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, the sovereign-built drones can be launched from ships or wharves and stored in standard shipping containers near water, enhancing strategic deterrence.
The navy plans to integrate them with crewed vessels, and the project follows a $1 billion investment in the Ghost Bat combat drone, expanding Australia’s unmanned military capabilities.
