Zimbabwe allows Zambia to use extra Kariba Dam water after full 2025 allocation was used.
Zimbabwe has agreed to let Zambia’s ZESCO use extra water from the Kariba Dam after ZESCO used its full 2025 allocation of 14 billion cubic meters.
The decision followed a joint energy meeting in Harare on October 20, 2025, between Zambia’s Energy Minister Makozo Chikote and Zimbabwe’s July Moyo.
They discussed coordinated water management at the shared dam, with both sides stressing cooperation and protecting the Zambezi River.
Zimbabwe urged more private investment in solar, gas, and fossil fuels to reduce hydroelectric dependence, while Zambia highlighted progress like the Mamba Energy Project.
Senior officials from both nations, including ZESCO’s CEO and the Zambezi River Authority’s head, attended.
