A 70-year-old Buddhist monk in Melbourne has been found guilty on 17 counts of historical child sexual abuse involving six girls.
A 70-year-old Buddhist head monk, Naotunne Vijitha, has been found guilty on 17 of 19 charges related to historical child sexual abuse involving six girls aged four to 12.
The offences, alleged to have occurred between 1994 and 2000 at Melbourne’s Dhamma Sarana Buddhist temple in Springvale and later Keysborough, took place in living quarters, a prayer room, and during Sunday school.
The victims, now adults, testified along with family and friends.
Vijitha, who pleaded not guilty, faced defense claims that the allegations were unreliable due to their age and implausibility.
The jury returned a guilty verdict on 17 charges, acquitted him on one, and continues deliberating on another, with a majority verdict allowed.
Sentencing is pending.
