A woman suffered severe burns in a Navy Pier fire caused by a flammable liquid at a s’mores station, leading to a lawsuit against the event operator.
A 25-year-old woman, Kira Bond, is one of five plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Offshore Rooftop at Chicago’s Navy Pier, following a fire on September 24 during a corporate event.
The incident, captured on video, occurred when a Maverick Hotels and Restaurants employee allegedly poured a flammable liquid, possibly alcohol, onto an open flame at a s’mores station, causing a flashover that severely burned Bond and others.
She sustained third-degree burns to her face, chest, and torso, requiring hospitalization at Stroger Hospital, multiple skin grafts, and ongoing treatment.
The lawsuit alleges negligence, lack of training, and failure to ensure guest safety.
Maverick Hotels and Restaurants expressed concern for the injured and confirmed cooperation with the investigation, but declined to comment due to ongoing litigation.
A status hearing is set for December.
