Westpac NZ has introduced new in-app and online card controls to help customers manage gambling and online spending.
The gambling block, available via the Westpac One app and online banking, prevents card use at casinos, lotteries, and gambling sites—domestic and overseas—though EFTPOS transactions remain unaffected.
A separate control disables online and over-the-phone purchases to curb unauthorized or impulsive spending.
Since mid-October, over 2,500 customers have used the online spending restriction, and more than 4,000 have engaged with the gambling block, building on 400 prior blocks since March 2024.
A two-day waiting period applies before removing the gambling control.
The tools are part of broader efforts to support financial wellbeing, following data showing over $273 million in gambling-related spending in the past three months, with lotteries and TABs making up over 60%.
Health New Zealand estimates 61,000 people face moderate to serious gambling harm.
The bank also partnered with fintech Akahu for better transaction insights and introduced a dynamic security code for online shopping.
Customers without digital access can request controls by phone.
