The Trump administration excluded Democratic lawmakers from a classified briefing on 14 Pacific strikes that killed 61 people, sparking accusations of partisan overreach.
The Trump administration excluded Democratic lawmakers from a classified briefing on 14 military strikes against suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Pacific, according to Sen. Mark Warner, who called the move a partisan breach of Congress’s constitutional oversight role.
The strikes, which have killed 61 people across 15 vessels, were justified by a classified Justice Department legal opinion shared only with Republican officials.
While the administration claims seven briefings were held, Democrats say the count is misleading, as the same briefings may have been repeated.
Warner demanded immediate access to the briefing and legal justification for Democrats, warning the exclusion undermines national security and sets a dangerous precedent.
The House Armed Services Committee is set to receive a separate classified update Thursday.
The White House has not commented.
