Teens using cannabis before 15 face higher mental and physical health risks in adulthood, study finds.
Teens who use cannabis before age 15 are more likely to face mental and physical health challenges in young adulthood, according to a study in JAMA Network Open.
Analyzing data from over 1,500 individuals in Quebec, researchers found that early, frequent users had a 51% higher risk of mental health care use and an 86% higher risk for physical health issues, even after adjusting for family conflict, bullying, and social factors.
Physical problems included respiratory issues and accidents, possibly tied to intoxication or withdrawal.
Experts say the adolescent brain is still developing, and regular cannabis use may disrupt areas critical for decision-making, emotion regulation, and impulse control.
The findings add to evidence that early use increases long-term health risks and underscore the importance of delaying use.
